The Team

Medical Oncology is part of the Canterbury Regional Cancer & Haematology Service (CRCHS), one of two tertiary cancer centres in the South Island of New Zealand.  Medical Oncology is responsible for medical management of cancer patients and the delivery of pharmaceutical cancer treatment. CRCHS provides medical oncology services to Canterbury, South Canterbury and West Coast Districts, support the South Island Child Cancer Service and the South Island Regional Gynaecological Oncology Service.  Medical Oncology is a predominantly outpatient service, with both dedicated clinical space and a cancer day ward to deliver pharmaceutical cancer treatments, supported by an inpatient service in the newly built Waipapa Hospital.

Medical Oncology has close links with the University of Otago’s Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  This interaction entails undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as active participation in local, national, and international basic and clinical research.  Research is supported through an autonomously funded clinical research service within the Oncology Department with a robust portfolio of industry and academic trials.
