Support essential maintenance and keep facilities running smoothly

We are seeking a reliable and hands-on Trade Assistant to join our Maintenance & Engineering team in Kaikōura. This is a varied and practical role where you will support the upkeep, repair, and operation of buildings, grounds, and essential services that enable high-quality healthcare delivery. 

About the Role

As a Trade Assistant, you will assist with the maintenance and repair of building services, plant, and equipment across our facilities. Your work will help ensure buildings and systems are safe, functional, and well-maintained.

You’ll work alongside a range of tradespeople and professionals, contributing to both day-to-day maintenance and improvement projects. 

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Assist with maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), water, steam, and medical gas systems
  • Support repairs to building structures, finishes, and general facilities
  • Carry out planned maintenance, condition checks, and defect repairs
  • Conduct regular inspections of building systems and services
  • Assist with installation, upgrades, and replacement of plant and equipment
  • Maintain safe working practices, including use of PPE and compliance with policies
  • Requisition parts and materials as required
  • Respond to urgent maintenance requests as needed

Projects & Continuous Improvement

  • Support delivery of maintenance projects within agreed timeframes
  • Identify and recommend improvements to systems, plant, and facilities
  • Work in accordance with maintenance standards and procedures 

About You

Essential:

  • Experience in building maintenance or a building services environment
  • Understanding of statutory building requirements and safe work practices
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with a range of professionals
  • Good time management and ability to prioritise tasks
  • Practical problem-solving skills and ability to identify maintenance needs
  • Ability to follow procedures and work both independently and as part of a team
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to respond to changing priorities
  • Reliable, with a professional and dependable approach

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a 24/7 operational environment
  • Ability to respond to and resolve operational issues efficiently
