About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Administration Team Leader to join our HR Shared Services Leadership Team at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury.
In this pivotal role, you will provide leadership and operational oversight to a team of administration specialists who deliver high-quality HR-related administrative and customer support services across the organisation. You’ll play a key part in maintaining service excellence, driving process improvement, and ensuring compliance in all aspects of people administration and support.
You’ll thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment—balancing people leadership, workload prioritisation, and system improvement to ensure efficient and accurate delivery of HR services that enhance the employee experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day leadership, management, and support to the administration team.
- Drive a culture of service excellence through consistent, client-focused delivery.
- Oversee operational planning, workflow coordination, and prioritisation of new and ongoing work and projects.
- Recruit, onboard, coach, and develop team members to ensure capability growth and succession.
- Monitor performance, set clear goals and KPIs, and ensure service standards are met.
- Review and improve processes, systems, and tools to enhance efficiency and consistency.
- Ensure all HR administration and support activities meet legislative and policy requirements.
- Produce accurate reporting to support audits and organisational outcomes.
- Lead with integrity, fostering inclusion, collaboration, and wellbeing across the team.

- Actively supports Māori health gain and equitable outcomes for Māori.
- Demonstrates cultural safety and awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in daily practice.
- Promotes Māori- and Pacific-led approaches to improving health equity and representation in leadership.
- Models’ cultural competence, critical self-awareness, and equity-focused decision-making.

You are a confident and people-focused leader who thrives on bringing out the best in others. With your strong organisational skills and passion for continuous improvement, you’ll be comfortable managing multiple priorities while fostering a positive, high-performing team culture.
Your ability to coach, mentor, and develop others—combined with your sound understanding of HR processes and compliance requirements—will ensure success in this key leadership role.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven leadership experience within an administrative or HR environment.
- Strong understanding of HR systems, processes, and legislative compliance (e.g. Holidays Act).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on customer service.
- Highly organised, adaptable, and able to manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equitable outcomes.
- High levels of integrity, professionalism, and self-awareness.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Proven experience in developing and coaching teams to achieve success.
Desirable Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field.
- Experience in the public health or government sector.
- Knowledge of HR information systems and reporting tools.
