This is an exciting new role within the South Island Eating Disorders Service (SIEDS), created to enhance the experience of tangata whaiora and their whānau throughout their treatment journey.
We are looking for someone who can bring the power of lived experience to support, connect, and inspire those accessing our service.
About the Role
As a Peer Support Worker, you will act as a vital bridge between clinicians and tangata whaiora, helping to strengthen communication, improve access to care, and enhance overall treatment experiences and outcomes.
Your lived experience of an eating disorder and recovery will provide hope, encouragement, and understanding to those currently navigating their own journey. You will build authentic, mutually respectful relationships with tangata whaiora and contribute meaningfully to their recovery.
You will also work alongside whānau, recognising the important role they play in supporting their loved one, and helping them feel informed, supported, and included throughout the treatment process.
About the Team
SIEDS is a specialist service supporting people with a range of eating disorders across the South Island. Based within the community team in Waitaha Canterbury, we provide direct clinical care as well as specialist support, supervision, and guidance to mental health services across the region.
You will be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team while also bringing a unique and valued peer perspective.
Key Responsibilities
- Build meaningful peer relationships with tangata whaiora based on trust, authenticity, and shared experience
- Use your lived experience to inspire hope and support recovery journeys
- Act as a connector between tangata whaiora, whānau, and the clinical team

- Contribute to a positive, inclusive team culture and multidisciplinary approach
- Communicate effectively and contribute to documentation and quality improvement initiatives
- Facilitate or support group-based peer support (training provided if required)
- Challenge stigma and promote inclusion, diversity, and understanding
About You
Essential:
- Lived experience of an eating disorder and personal recovery, including engagement with support services
- Ability to use your lived experience appropriately in a peer support capacity
- Strong self-awareness, including wellbeing, self-care, and stress management
- Confident, professional, and able to work in partnership with others
- Commitment to ongoing personal and professional development
- Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and commitment to culturally responsive practice
- Excellent communication skills and ability to connect with a wide range of people
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong networking and community engagement skills
- Full driver’s licence
Desirable:
- Experience working as a Peer Support Worker
