Mō te tūnga | About the role

Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) in Christchurch, New Zealand are seeking expressions of interest from qualified Anatomical Pathologists to join our laboratory at Christchurch Hospital. We are seeking either a Full-time permanent role or Permanent Part Time Consultant to join our team of specialists. You will be working alongside twenty other Consultant Anatomical Pathologists, supported by a skilled team of laboratory scientists, administrative support, and seven registrars. The department has an internationally diverse workforce whom have made New Zealand their home. 

The department receives a wide range of specimens from all subspecialty areas, and provides histology and cytology services across Canterbury and the West Coast regions, as well as a tertiary referral service and multidisciplinary team support for the South Island more broadly.

Pathologists have access to a wide range of IHC stains, diagnostic molecular pathology (NGS and FISH), and surface marker flow cytometry techniques within the laboratory. 

The AP Department is based in the University of Otago - School of Medicine and actively supports training of medical students. Some pathologists hold joint academic roles with options to pursue research interests.

Preference will be given to applicants with a broad general pathology background, but an interest in any of the following areas would be viewed favourably: dermatopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, soft tissue, genitourinary pathology, neuropathology, or non-gynaecological cytology. 

Mentoring will be available for a less experienced candidate who wishes to further develop areas of practice at the subspecialty level. Participation will be required within an On-Call service, shared across the consultant team. There is no requirement of this role to complete hospital post-mortems
