The Business Intelligence – Business Partnering Team has shared responsibility for enabling health providers across the Canterbury and West Coast systems to empower and enable staff and governance bodies to continuously improve service delivery, proactively identify and mitigate clinical risks, enhance equity of outcomes and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery using data, information and intelligence.

The team acts as a facilitation and active brokerage service, combining high level analytical expertise with sound health service business knowledge to actively partner with health providers to develop intelligence from a variety of sources – quantitative and qualitative.

Ko wai koe | About You

The Business Intelligence Business Partner will work collaboratively with senior management groups across the Canterbury Waitaha District to embed attainable measures within their strategic plans, and to develop operational key performance indicators that can be acted upon.

The Business Intelligence Business Partner will promote a data-driven health system by building the data competency of senior staff and concurrently drive future business intelligence strategies by pulling together user story scenarios from these forums. You will have an efficient, pragmatic and approachable style with the ability to build productive relationships with people at all levels.

Specifically, the role is responsible for:

  • Relationships – Build strong relationships with operational and support management and clinicians together with external agencies
  • Advice & Support – Provide a range of high quality professional analytical support and advice that is service- centric and customer-focussed
  • Strategic – Understand the direction of the Canterbury health system and the context in which planning and projects are being undertaken
  • Data Knowledge - Maintain a high level of understanding of data sources available to Business Intelligence and the wider Canterbury Waitaha District, their uses and limitations
  • Information Analysis and Education - Provision of analytical support to clinical departments, including education of staff, to enable them to make well informed business and clinical decisions
  • Health Sector - Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the NZ Health environment, and of relevant standards and policies
  • Other Duties - Undertake such other duties as reasonably directed by the Senior Manager from time to time.


Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

This role requires the following skills:


  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • Proven track record of work experience over multiple years in a related discipline
  • Proven experience building trusted relationships with stakeholders, customers and project teams 
  • Extensive knowledge of the public sector environment and experience working on cross-sector projects
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills, and analytical presentation expertise
  • Experience providing leadership in a team environment
  • Proven track record in making quality improvements and improving the technical understanding of non-technical staff
  • Be competent in BI tools, particularly Power BI
  • The ability to explain complex issues clearly and provide advice to a wide variety of stakeholders and senior decision makers
  • The ability to gather, interpret and distil information to make recommendations and inform insight
  • Sound judgement and awareness of the context within which advice is formulated and communicated i.e. an ability to see ‘the big picture’
  • A high degree of numeracy
  • Familiarity with a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques, and business intelligence tools
  • Hold a desire to keep the patient at the centre of strategic planning, and a knowledge of equity & privacy concerns within the BI context
  • A mind-set towards continuous improvement, and the ability to lead, take initiative and challenge the status quo 


  • Be competent in using a Data Warehouse and Microsft SQL as a source for information reporting and analysis
  • Experience in planning and developing business cases
  • Possess a strong interest in coaching and enabling others
  • The ability to stay abreast of advancements in the business intelligence arena
