The Team: What we do

Christchurch Women’s Hospital (CWH), based in central Ōtautahi (Christchurch), is a modern acute, major teaching hospital for midwifery and obstetrics. Canterbury has over 6000 births per annum and CWH is the tertiary referral centre for the bulk of the Te Waipounamu.

We have a wonderful opportunity for an experienced senior Registered Midwife to join our team as the Maternity Ward - Charge Midwife Manager. This is a key midwifery leadership role that will provide you with the opportunity for personal growth, strategic professional development and a chance to positively influence the midwifery profession within the Canterbury District Health Board.

Our unit is a very busy 45 bed ward, and a dynamic and dedicated team work here delivering secondary and tertiary midwifery and obstetric care to both antenatal and postnatal wāhine and pēpē.

The Role: Where you fit in

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a committed and motivated individual who is looking to expand their career pathway to take on a midwifery management role that includes requirements to ensure both financial and operational objectives are carried out in line with the CDHB Maternity Strategy.  A copy of this document is available on request.

Your ability to enthusiastically lead a diverse multidisciplinary team in a challenging but supportive environment, alongside your commitment to innovative quality improvement and familiarity with managing change will see you succeed in this key leadership role.

As a highly organised and motivated experienced midwife you will have recognised clinical expertise, have extensive clinical experience and a relevant postgraduate qualification enabling you to provide leadership confidently within all areas of midwifery care. Excellent interpersonal skills, a team player and the ability to proactively provide clear direction and problem solve is essential for this role. 

Supported by the Director of Midwifery, Midwifery Manager and other senior Women’s & Children’s Maternity team members you will strive to promote excellence, tautoko and support and facilitate improved women centred care which recognises equity outcomes within our maternity services.

  • 1.0 FTE Mon – Fri with some on call shared with other midwifery leaders in the team

Skills & Experience:


  • Experienced Registered Midwife with current practising certificate and no conditions.
  • Relevant managerial/clinical leadership experience with the ability to think strategically.
  • Has the ability to provide direction for and evaluate midwifery care within the service.
  • Commitment to and demonstrated history of both an understanding and application of the Te Tiriti O Waitangi and Turanga Kaupapa.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite and general computer literacy including CDHB programmes e.g. Microster, Trendcare/CCDM.


  • Ability to manage a budget, with experience in financial planning preferred.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification or working towards one.
