Clinical Nurse Specialist | North Inpatient Unit
- 1.0FTE, Fixed-Term, Full-time Position from May 2026 until February 2027 (covering Parental Leave) working Monday to Friday.
- Clinical leadership role in an adult acute mental health inpatient unit for an experienced registered nurse.
- Must have at least 3 years recent experience in an adult acute inpatient unit.
- Must either hold or have commenced study towards a post graduate diploma with the focus on nursing.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with current APC and must have a mental health scope of practice.
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Adherence to guidelines of Cultural Safety and the Treaty of Waitangi

About the Role
Awakura (Adult Inpatient Group) is a 64-bedadult acute inpatient unit that provides 24-hour care to consumers experiencingacute mental illness. Our model of care primarily focuses on integratedmultidisciplinary teams who strive to provide excellent care to tāngata whaiorain the least restrictive manner.
North Inpatient provides services to consumersin North area of Christchurch, we work closely with our outpatient team andother community services. We are made up of passionate clinicians who work inthe patients’ best interests at all times. We have a supportive team cultureand encourage opportunities for growth and development.
About You
This full time, permanent, Monday to Friday working the morning duty. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and motivated individual who is looking to expand their career pathway to take on a clinical leadership role. With your proven ability to lead, you will be an expert at developing and extending nursing practice, assisting with performance appraisals, auditing, quality improvement, and providing overall clinical expertise and mentorship within the team, enabling them to continue to deliver a high standard of care.
This job requires:
- Experienced, Specialist Mental Health Nurse, registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a current APC - must include scope for Mental Health Nursing.
- Adhere to guidelines of Cultural Safety and the Treaty of Waitangi.
- Motivated and flexible self-starter with the ability to work both in a team and autonomously.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills.
- Expert clinical nursing knowledge and leadership ability.
- Extensive experience working within mental health is essential – you will hold a relevant post graduate diploma or commenced study towards one and have a least three years post graduate experience in mental health.
- The ability to be adaptable, flexible and solution focused.
- As a
role model it is expected you will engage with nursing staff and members
of the Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure effective relationships are
developed and maintained, therefore your integrity, excellent
interpersonal skills, effective organisational and time management skills
and clinical credibility are imperative to the success of this role.
