Clinical Physiologist Charge - ICU

About the Role

The Department of Intensive Care delivers services include Tertiary Intensive and High Dependency Care, Deteriorating Patient Intensive Care Outreach Service, and the Air Retrieval Service. As a leader within our Scientific and Technical Teams, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality care in Waitaha/Canterbury, while fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for staff.

The Charge Clinical Physiologist is responsible for leading a team of Clinical Physiologists providing specialised technical and clinical support services within the Department of Intensive Care at Christchurch Hospital. This role combines operational leadership, workforce management, clinical expertise, equipment management, service development and project leadership. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including intensive care medical staff, nursing leaders, clinical engineering, procurement, operational managers and external suppliers to ensure the safe and effective delivery of critical care services.

The role supports all critical care equipment systems within ICU, with particular focus on respiratory support technologies, oxygen therapy systems, patient monitoring equipment and complex patient transport requirements across Christchurch Hospital and Canterbury.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

• Leading and managing the Physiology department in ICU
• Supporting team heads in staffing, performance management, training, and professional development
• Fostering a positive team environment and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration
• Modelling excellent clinical practice and contribute to quality improvement initiatives
• Promoting cultural responsiveness, including working with Māori to ensure equitable health outcomes
• Representing the department in national professional and planning meetings
• Ensuring safe, effective and efficient management of critical care equipment and associated clinical support services
• Providing expert advice on respiratory therapy equipment, oxygen delivery systems and specialised ICU technologies
• Leading implementation of new equipment, technologies and clinical systems within ICU and associated services
• Contributing to capital equipment planning, procurement processes and service development initiatives

About You

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Charge Clinical Physiologist who thrives in a leadership role and is committed to developing others. You’ll bring clinical expertise in ICU, alongside proven leadership capabilities in team management, performance improvement, and cultivating a collaborative, high-performance environment. Experience in working within a Te Ao Māori framework and a focus on equitable outcomes for Māori is highly valued.

Your skills will include:

• Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in an appropriate field of health science e.g. Physiology
• Minimum five years clinical experience in critical care, respiratory physiology or a related clinical specialty
• Demonstrated leadership experience within a healthcare setting
• Advanced knowledge of critical care equipment, respiratory support technologies and oxygen therapy systems
• Commitment to continuous learning, including CPD and research involvement
• Knowledge of te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth

Desirable:

• Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Technology or relevant postgraduate qualification
• Experience leading service development, quality improvement or capital equipment projects
• Experience working within complex multidisciplinary healthcare environments
