Clinical Psychologist – Psychiatric Consultation Service

About the Role

The Psychiatric Consultation Service (PCS) provides specialist assessment and treatment of adults with complex physical health conditions who are under the care of hospital-based specialists (such as neurology, general surgery, nephology, gastro-enterology etc). PCS supports the client to manage the emotional impact of their physical health condition. PCS provides short to medium term psychological interventions mainly on an outpatient basis. Assessment and intervention can also be required for inpatients at Christchurch Hospital and Christchurch Women’s Hospital.

Psychologists working in PCS become part of a larger psychology team and have access to journal clubs and special interest groups to support their practice. Each psychologist is funded to attend professional training, and psychologists are encouraged to develop specialty areas of practice and to teach or do research in these areas. Te Whatu Ora – Waitaha also offers a range of free training in supervision and leadership.

About You

This position requires someone who has the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively. With your knowledge base, you’ll be well equipped to support staff from a range of professional backgrounds with advice and clinical consultation.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide comprehensive clinical assessment, psychometric testing, and therapeutic interventions individually or in groups;
  • Support for the medical teams in understanding the psychological formulations of their clients and the impact this has on treatments and clinical approach;

Skills and Experience

  • You’ll need great organisation and excellent time management to keep up with this client group;
  • You will have the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • You will be a NZ Registered Psychologist in the Clinical scope with a current practicing certificate; 
  • Experience of working with people with complex physical health conditions is highly desirable
