The Canterbury Health System is a world leader in the delivery of integrated health care. Our main focus is placing people (staff and patients alike) at the centre of everything we do.
The second year House Officer undertakes a leadership role of the first year House Officers. They are expected to provide guidance and mentorship and arrange weekly teaching sessions for the first year House Officers.
You will be rostered on three weekly rotations with the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery as Dental House Officer, plus some nights and weekends. This involves attending patients with facial trauma and facial infection in the Emergency Department as well as attending operating theatre and oral and maxillofacial clinical sessions.
The second year House Officer nominates one or two areas of interest and these are rostered into their weekly pattern to extend their knowledge in the nominated areas (e.g. special care or orthodontics). While we hold the Department of Corrections dental contract, the second year House Officer is expected to attend Christchurch Men’s Prison approximately once per week to undertake a full day clinical session. The majority of this treatment is relief of pain.
