About the Role
As an Emergency Medicine Doctor in our Fellowship programme, you will work within a dynamic, high-volume Emergency Department at Christchurch Hospital, seeing over 135,000 patients per year. Approximately 25% of these patients are admitted, offering rich clinical exposure. Your time will be split between hands-on clinical work and dedicated non-clinical Fellowship activities tailored to your area of interest.
Subspecialty Fellowship areas include:
- Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine
- Ultrasound
- Medical Education and Simulation
- Administration and Health Pathway development
- Research
- Toxicology
- Health Informatics
- Geriatrics in ED
- Palliative Care
This is not a clinical fellowship in the UK sense. It is designed for doctors who are nearing the completion of Emergency Medicine training or are within five years post-Fellowship.
About the Team / Service / Location
Our Emergency Department team in Waipapa, Christchurch, is renowned for clinical excellence and as a finishing school for Advanced Trainees, Fellows, and new Consultants. Our supportive team culture, emphasis on teaching, and vast array of Fellowship opportunities make us the only ED in Aotearoa New Zealand to offer this scale of training.
You will also spend time working in our rural ED in Ashburton (2 shifts every 7 weeks), giving you exposure to a different pace and scope of emergency medicine practice.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will:
- Be an advanced trainee nearing completion of Fellowship with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (i.e. post-written exam)
- Or be within five years post-Fellowship in Emergency Medicine
- Or hold an equivalent overseas Emergency Medicine qualification eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Have strong clinical and leadership skills, with a desire to contribute to service improvement and education
- Be passionate about emergency medicine and committed to advancing your expertise in a supportive and stimulating environment
