Are you passionate about food preparation and making a real difference in your community? We’re looking for a reliable and motivated Food Service Assistantto join our team. This role is essential in ensuring patients and Meals on Wheels recipients receive nutritious, high-quality meals on time, every time.

About the Role

The Food Service Assistant supports the delivery of safe, healthy, and delicious food in line with food handling and safety protocols. You’ll assist with daily food preparation, plating, and delivery, while maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment. With the right orientation, you’ll also step into the role of Cook when required, ensuring flexibility and smooth operations within the kitchen team.

Salary starting from $ 28.63 per hour. Based on the E tū Service and Food Workers collective agreement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily food preparation, portioning, and plating.
  • Prepare vegetables, salads, and other menu items as needed.
  • Prepare food for Meals on Wheels and patient services.
  • Adhere to the site Food Control Plan and food safety protocols.
  • Provide cover for the Cook, preparing patient meals to high standards following recipes and dietary guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen environment, including benches, equipment, and service areas.
  • Complete cleaning schedules, waste handling, and stock replenishment.
  • Contribute to a safe, respectful, and positive team culture.
  • Uphold patient privacy, cultural safety, and equitable health outcomes, with a focus on Māori health gain and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action.

About you

Essential:

  • Experience implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Customer-focused, with the ability to build positive relationships.
  • Working knowledge of food safety requirements and Food Control Plans.
  • Understanding of dietary needs, allergens, and nutritional supplements.
  • Physically fit and familiar with safe moving and handling practices.
  • Ability to work well in a team and manage time effectively.

Desired:

  • NZQA Food Handling Certificate (Units 167/168).
  • Previous kitchen cleaning or food service experience, ideally in healthcare.
