About the Role

As a General Practitioner in our Specialist Mental Health Service (SMHS), you will provide holistic, patient-centred care to consumers across the Forensic Mental Health Services and IDPH areas. You’ll work closely with a multidisciplinary team to manage chronic conditions, monitor medication effects, address acute health concerns, and contribute to long-term physical health planning. This role also includes liaison with SMHS House Officers and Registrars. This is a rewarding opportunity to support some of our most vulnerable populations and make a meaningful difference in their health and wellbeing.

Our team at Hillmorton Hospital is part of the wider Specialist Mental Health Services for Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury. We work with tāngata whaiora in secure inpatient and community-based settings, delivering high-quality care across a broad spectrum of needs. The IDPH and Forensic MHS  teams are experienced, supportive, and committed to collaborative, wraparound care.

About you

As a General Practitioner, you will bring:

  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in General Practice (or eligibility for registration)
  • A passion for working with complex patient populations
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience or interest in mental health, forensic care, or intellectual disability services (preferred)
  • A commitment to equity, bicultural practice, and person-centred care
