General Surgeon | Transalpine
Location: Canterbury & West Coast | Commencing: 2 February 2026
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking a General Surgeon to join our TransAlpine surgical service, delivering high-quality surgical care across both the Canterbury and West Coast regions.
About the Role
This unique role is part of the TransAlpine agreement established in 2010, enabling shared executive and clinical services across both Canterbury and the West Coast. As General Surgeon, you will:
- Work across both locations contributing to acute general surgery rosters
- Conduct regular outpatient clinics, surgical and endoscopy lists in Christchurch and on the West Coast
- Utilise telehealth to improve patient access and reduce travel burdens for whānau
This fixed term, full-time position (1.2 FTE) offers an exciting opportunity to work in a varied and collaborative environment that spans two vibrant health districts.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver acute general surgical services in both regions
- Provide consistent outpatient, theatre, and endoscopy care
- Support regional service integration and continuity
- Lead virtual care innovations via telehealth
Candidate Requirements
We are seeking applications from Registered Medical Practitioners who:
- Hold advanced training in General Surgery
- Are eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Have experience working across multidisciplinary teams
- Demonstrate a strong whānau-centred, equity-focused approach to care
- Can confidently adapt to regional and telehealth-based models of delivery
