Legislation & Compliance Officer (Payroll)

About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legislation & Compliance Officer to join the West Coast Payroll Team. This role plays a key part in delivering accurate, compliant and people-focused payroll services across Health New Zealand Waitaha and Te Tai o Poutini.
Working as part of the senior payroll team, you will provide payroll processing, legislative guidance and technical support while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. This is a varied role requiring excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to outstanding customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing & Compliance
- Process payroll documentation including timesheets, leave forms and exception sheets
- Calculate payroll entitlements in line with employment agreements and legislation
- Participate in fortnightly payroll processing
- Maintain payroll data, tax, deductions and KiwiSaver information
- Complete IR filing, payroll audits and payroll reconciliations
- Calculate final pays, back pays, overpayments, parental leave payments and leave cash-ups
- Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies and payment issues
Legislation & Technical Support
- Provide accurate information to ACC and external agencies
- Ensure payroll practices comply with the Holidays Act, ACC legislation and employment agreements
- Support process improvements and maintain consistency across payroll functions
- Provide technical expertise and support to colleagues
Team Support & Customer Service
- Support and train payroll team members
- Respond to payroll queries professionally and confidentially
- Build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Work collaboratively with HRSS and People & Capability teams
- Ensure accurate data entry and meet payroll deadlines
About You
You will be an organised and customer-focused payroll professional with strong technical knowledge and a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Payroll processing experience or knowledge
- Understanding of the Holidays Act and ACC legislation
- Fast and accurate data entry skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work calmly and professionally under pressure

- Experience within the health sector or related industry
- Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Problem-solving ability and initiative
