About the Role

Our Specialist Mental Health Services (SMHS) are at the leading edge of mental health service delivery. We provide a range of inpatient and community services to people in the Canterbury district. Our SMHS offer a wide range of specialty areas, including: Adult Community; Adult Acute; Rehabilitation; Child, Adolescent and Family (CAF); Forensic; Alcohol and Drug; Intellectually Disabled Persons’ Health, and more.

We’re looking for a Māori Nurse Educator to join our SMHS Training Unit as a Clinical Educator. This is a full time opportunity working 40hrs per week (1FTE) based at Hillmorton Hospital.

The Māori Nurse Educator provides leadership in developing and delivering tikanga-informed practice to nursing in SMHS. If you have a passion for the continued education of our Mental Health Workforce, then we want to hear from you.

About you

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Develops and delivers tikanga-informed education sessions to participants in nursing first year of practice programmes
  • Provides support to Māori first year of practice nurses through the delivery of support days
  • Provides clinical supervision to Māori nurses in the Nursing Entry to Specialist Practice (NESP) programme
  • Provides support to training unit staff to ensure nursing education has a tikanga-informed focus
  • In partnership with service-based educators, develops and delivers education to service-based kaimahi
  • In consultation with the Nurse Consultant: Workforce Development, supports senior nursing staff to upskill in tikanga-informed practice and education delivery
  • Contributes to activities to improve the recruitment, retention, development, and leadership opportunities of Māori kaimahi. 

To be successful in this role it is essential that you have:

  • Experience in the delivery of clinical or professional education/training e.g. as a field work educator or preceptor;
  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice, process, policy development and decision making
  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in provision of health care services and support to Māori
  • Whakapapa to Iwi
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a minimum of three years mental health and addictions clinical experience.
