Medical Laboratory Technician | Canterbury Health Laboratories

About the role
Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) provides a 24/7 service to the hospital and the community which includes high volume automation as well as some manual testing. Our primary focus is to provide the best service possible for the care of the patient.
The Anatomical Pathology Department operates Monday to Friday, between the hours of 07:00 and 18:00.
Part of Canterbury Health Laboratories and based on the campus of Christchurch Hospital, the Anatomical Pathology Department is made up of a team of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, Pathology Assistants, Pathologists, Registrars as well as Administrative staff. Days and hours for this role are to be negotiated.
About you
We’re looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our team at Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL), a leading medical diagnostic reference laboratory in New Zealand. This is a permanent, part-time role working in the Anatomical Pathology Department.
The successful applicant will join the Histology MLT team, performing all core Histology tasks, along with specials stains.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Preparing stained slides (including embedding, microtomy and staining)
- Technical assistance for the receipting, processing, sectioning and staining of urgent paraffin and fresh sections (frozen sections)
- Providing a high-quality service to clients
Skills and experience
- Time management skills
- Communication and Interpersonal skills
- The ability to maintain high professional standards
- A working knowledge of laboratory information systems
- You will be registered (or eligible for registration) as a Medical Laboratory Technician with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand
- Previous experience in Histology, including special stains, is advantageous
