Medical Laboratory Technician
- Christchurch – Canterbury Health Laboratories – Core Biochemistry
- Fixed term until 27/04/2027 working 40 hours per week
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our Core Biochemistry team. This role is essential in delivering high-quality laboratory services that support patient diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care.
Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is a busy diagnostic facility providing services to in-patients and outpatients at Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury within Christchurch. You’ll be working for the largest medical laboratory in the South Island which is also a major secondary/tertiary referral centre with a varied and challenging case load. We have a modern and well-equipped lab including a good range of specialist equipment.
About the Role
As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will perform routine testing and associated duties within the Core Biochemistry Department. You will contribute to the delivery of a reliable and efficient laboratory service, ensuring accuracy, quality, and professionalism in all aspects of your work.
Key Responsibilities
High Quality Service
- Provide prompt, courteous, and professional service to clients and patients
- Respond to enquiries effectively and escalate feedback when required
Laboratory Information Systems
- Accurately enter patient details and test results into laboratory systems
- Retrieve and manage data efficiently using laboratory information systems and middleware
Technical & Analytical Duties
- Perform routine laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised work environment
- Carry out all duties competently within your scope of practice
Quality Assurance
- Adhere to laboratory quality systems, policies, and procedures
- Participate in internal quality control (QC) and external quality assurance (EQA) programmes
- Identify and report any deviations from standard procedures
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives
About You
Essential:
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Technician
- Current Annual Practising Certificate
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent
- Ability to maintain high professional standards in line with competency requirements
- Understanding of, and commitment to, Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice
Desirable:
- Previous experience working in a diagnostic laboratory, particularly in biochemistry
