Medical Laboratory Technician

• Fixed term until 27/04/2027 working 40 hours per week

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our Core Biochemistry team. This role is essential in delivering high-quality laboratory services that support patient diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care.

Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is a busy diagnostic facility providing services to in-patients and outpatients at Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury within Christchurch. You’ll be working for the largest medical laboratory in the South Island which is also a major secondary/tertiary referral centre with a varied and challenging case load.  We have a modern and well-equipped lab including a good range of specialist equipment.

About the Role

As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will perform routine testing and associated duties within the Core Biochemistry Department. You will contribute to the delivery of a reliable and efficient laboratory service, ensuring accuracy, quality, and professionalism in all aspects of your work.

Key Responsibilities

High Quality Service

• Provide prompt, courteous, and professional service to clients and patients
• Respond to enquiries effectively and escalate feedback when required

Laboratory Information Systems

• Accurately enter patient details and test results into laboratory systems
• Retrieve and manage data efficiently using laboratory information systems and middleware

Technical & Analytical Duties

• Perform routine laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures
• Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised work environment
• Carry out all duties competently within your scope of practice

Quality Assurance

• Adhere to laboratory quality systems, policies, and procedures
• Participate in internal quality control (QC) and external quality assurance (EQA) programmes
• Identify and report any deviations from standard procedures
• Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives 

About You

Essential:

• Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Technician
• Current Annual Practising Certificate
• Relevant tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent
• Ability to maintain high professional standards in line with competency requirements
• Understanding of, and commitment to, Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice

Desirable:

• Previous experience working in a diagnostic laboratory, particularly in biochemistry
