Mental Health Assistant | Hillmorton Hospital
- Christchurch - Hillmorton Hospital- Te Whare Hohou Roko
- Permanent role - 0.94 FTE
- Shifts – 24/7 Rotating roster of 4 days on, 2 days off. Morning 7am – 3:30pm, Afternoon 3:00pm – 11:00pm, Night 10:45pm – 7:15am. There will be opportunities to work Monday to Friday to assist with unit activities.

About the Role
Te Whare Hohou Roko is a 9-bed medium secure inpatient unit that provides specialised therapeutic security for people who, as a result of their mental illness, have seriously offended or are assessed as high risk for serious offending. The multi-disciplinary team delivers individualised, person centred, collaborative care based on tangata whaiora’s needs, risk assessments, identified goals, cultural identity, and consented family whanau input. Plans are developed whilst balancing risk management, minimising the effects of mental illness, with recovery orientated approaches.
We are seeking a Mental Health Assistant (MHA) to bring their care, compassion, and non-discriminatory attitude to support and value the tangata whaiora we work with. You will work under the direction and delegation of registered or enrolled nurse to assist with planned care activities and procedures. As a team we treat each other with respect and dignity and work to together to provide meaningful outcomes and safe integration back into the community.
Skills and Experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to engage well.
- Effective problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Initiative and a proactive approach to work.
- Ideally experience as a Hospital Aide or similar
- Mental Health experience is highly desirable.
