Mental Health Assistant | Housekeeper - North & West Inpatient Units - Hillmorton Hospital
- Shifts – Monday to Friday 08:00 -16:30

About the Role
Te Awakura is a 64-bed adult acute inpatient unit that provides 24-hour care for consumers with mental illness. Our model of care focuses on integrated multidisciplinary teams, providing excellent care for consumers in the least restrictive manner. There are four units that form Te Awakura: North, East, South and West. Each unit has 16 beds and has a variety of disciplines who work in these units, Nurses, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Mental Health, and Allied Health Assistants.
Currently we have 1x full-time permanent Mental Health Assistant (MHA)/Housekeeping vacancy, the role is primarily focused on housekeeping within West & North inpatient units, but you may be asked to work in other areas. You would be working closely with the MHA/Housekeeper who works in the South and East units.

Mental Health Assistants/housekeeping role has a vital role in the day-to-day functioning of the ward. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the smooth daily operation of the ward
- kitchen & dining area responsibilities, restocking, maintenance requests
- linen, laundry, and supply/ordering of same
- Management of incoming orders, restocking of housekeeping room and clinic
- Completing environmental checks in liaison with the Charge Nurse Manager or delegate
- Coordinating with cleaning services to maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment.
- Supporting consumers in activities as requested by nursing staff.
While you will not carry a patient load, the role involves regular direct consumer contact. A non-judgemental approach, strong communication skills, and sound decision-making abilities are essential.
You will work closely with the MHA/Housekeeper from the South and East units to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of a busy acute inpatient service.

Skills and Experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to engage well.
- Effective problem solving and decision-making skills.
- A full & clean drivers licence
- Ability to work well under pressure and autonomously.
- Initiative and a proactive approach to work
- Ideally experience as a Hospital Aide or similar
- Mental Health experience is highly desirable.
