Midwife Coordinator - BFHI (Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative)

About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Midwife Coordinator – Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) to join our Women’s and Children’s Safety and Quality team, located in the Maternity Ward of Christchurch Women’s Hospital. This role provides professional leadership, coordination and clinical expertise to support breastfeeding, lactation education and leading Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) principles across maternity services.
Working as an autonomous practitioner, you will partner with wāhine, whānau and multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, maternity care during inpatient stays. You will play a pivotal role in facilitating lactation education, supporting midwifery and nursing staff, liaising with NICU, and leading or contributing to projects that promote the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding.
About the Service
The Women’s and Children’s Safety and Quality team, located in the Maternity Ward of Christchurch Women’s Hospital actively promotes and leads a “whole of system” approach to quality, risk and patient safety programmes.
About You
You are a committed midwife with a strong passion for women’s and children’s health and the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. You value partnership, cultural safety and equity, and bring a demonstrated understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in health care.
You are confident working both
autonomously and collaboratively in a complex tertiary environment, with
excellent communication, organisational and relationship-building skills. You
are enthusiastic about quality improvement, education and supporting colleagues
to deliver best-practice maternity care.
Skills and Experience:
• Registered Midwife with the Midwifery Council of New
Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate
• Demonstrated understanding of maternity care delivery in New Zealand
• Strong commitment to breastfeeding, lactation support and health promotion
• Ability to work effectively in a busy environment with competing demands
• Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills
• Understanding of, and commitment to, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity and
culturally safe practice
