About the Role
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury is seeking an experienced SMO to join the Pain Management Centre (PMC) at Burwood Hospital. The PMC provides specialist assessment and treatment for people living with chronic musculoskeletal and non-malignant pain conditions.
As an SMO – MSK and Pain Management, you will work as part of a coordinated interdisciplinary team delivering outpatient clinics, pain management programmes, interventional procedures, and occasional inpatient care. You will play a key role in supporting patients to regain function, improve wellbeing, and enhance quality of life through evidence-based, holistic pain management approaches.
This role also offers the opportunity to contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, teaching, and supervision within a highly regarded multidisciplinary service.
About the Team / Service / Location
The Pain Management Centre is part of Older Persons Health & Rehabilitation Services and is recognised for its collaborative and patient-focused model of care. The multidisciplinary team includes specialist medical staff, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and allied health professionals working together to deliver comprehensive pain management services across Canterbury.

About You
As an SMO – MSK and Pain Management, you will bring:
- Vocational registration, or eligibility for vocational registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Experience in musculoskeletal medicine, chronic pain management, or a related specialty area
- A collaborative approach and experience working within multidisciplinary teams
- Excellent communication, teaching, and clinical leadership skills
- A commitment to culturally safe practice and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Applicants with Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPMANZCA), Musculoskeletal Medicine qualifications, Rehabilitation Medicine, General Practice with specialist pain/MSK expertise, or related experience are encouraged to apply.
International applicants should be eligible to obtain Medical Council of New Zealand registration.
