Mō te tūnga - About the Role

A8 is a unique ward accommodating both the Acute Stroke Unit and Vascular Surgery specialties. We are a passionate and dynamic team who support a diverse patient group, taking a holistic approach to providing a high standard of combined medical and surgical nursing management. Our team is diverse with a myriad of backgrounds and expertise which brings a richness of knowledge and skill to patient care. We are looking for energetic nurses who are eager to strengthen and develop their skills in these specialty areas. You will be well supported by the senior nursing team which comprises of CNM, nurse educator, stroke CNS and vascular CNS.

Currently there are 24 inpatient ward beds, but we are expanding… We are looking for nurses to join the A8 team as we prepare to open 4 beds in the progressive care unit (PCU). The PCU will provide intermediate level nursing for both stroke and vascular patients as they step down from ICU or to support higher acuity needs at a 1:2 nursing ratio.

We have a wide range of complex patient presentations which includes acute and elective, medical and surgical, local and wider South Island.

Patients commonly present for procedure and clinical management such as:

  • Endovascular procedures such as angioplasty (+/- stenting), clot retrieval and EVAR.
  • Complex surgical interventions such as endarterectomy, peripheral arterial bypass and open aneurysm repair (including AAA).
  • Minor and major amputations (toe, forefoot, BKA, AKA)
  • Conservative medical management such as thrombolysis, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)
  • Optimal management of chronic comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
