About the Role
As a Neonatal SMO (Neonatal Paediatrician), you will provide comprehensive specialist care to newborns requiring neonatal services across Christchurch Women’s Hospital and the wider Canterbury/West Coast region.
You will be part of a dynamic neonatal team delivering care across Level 3 and Level 2 services, contributing to inpatient, outpatient, and acute care, including participation in neonatal retrievals and high-risk deliveries.
This role offers a varied and stimulating scope of practice, including:
- Shared responsibility for the clinical management of neonates in inpatient and postnatal settings
- Participation in a 24/7 on-call roster, including acute admitting weeks
- Antenatal consultation and support for Lead Maternity Carers and obstetric teams
- Ongoing follow-up care through outpatient clinics
- Teaching and supervision of registrars, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists
- Active involvement in service development, quality improvement, and clinical governance

About the Team / Service / Location
The Neonatal Service at Christchurch Women’s Hospital provides specialist care for newborns across the Canterbury and West Coast regions. The service includes Level 3 intensive care and Level 2 care, supported by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team.
You will work closely with obstetrics, paediatrics, allied health, and regional providers, with strong links to the University of Otago, Christchurch.

About You
As a Neonatal SMO, you will bring:
- Vocational registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Postgraduate qualifications in neonatology with relevant clinical experience
- Experience in Level 3 neonatal intensive care (including exposure to neonatal surgery desirable)
- A strong commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- A passion for teaching, mentoring, and continuous professional development
