About the Role
We are seeking a Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist to join our Women’s Health Service at Christchurch Women’s Hospital on a fixed-term basis for 12 months to provide parental leave cover starting from September 2026.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a dynamic and supportive team delivering secondary and tertiary obstetric and gynaecology services to the Canterbury and West Coast populations. The successful applicant will contribute to a broad range of clinical activities across inpatient, outpatient, acute assessment, and theatre settings.
The role offers a varied and rewarding workload, including acute obstetric and gynaecology care, antenatal services, operating theatre sessions, outpatient clinics, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and participation in the after-hours on-call roster. You will work closely with midwives, Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs), sonographers, radiologists, geneticists, anaesthetists, neonatologists, and other specialist colleagues to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
In addition to clinical duties, you will contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities, and the education and supervision of registrars and junior medical staff.

Christchurch Women’s Hospital is the South Island’s largest maternity facility and provides specialist obstetric, gynaecology, and neonatal services for Canterbury and the wider South Island region. The Women’s Health Service is recognised for its commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, teaching, and research.
Our Obstetrics & Gynaecology team is made up of highly skilled specialists, trainees, nursing, midwifery, and allied health professionals who work collaboratively to deliver exceptional care and achieve the best outcomes for patients and their whānau.

About You
As a Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, you will:
- Hold vocational registration in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (or be eligible for vocational registration) with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Have broad clinical experience across secondary and tertiary obstetric and gynaecology services.
- Demonstrate a commitment to clinical excellence, quality improvement, and patient-centred care.
- Have experience in teaching, supervision, and supporting the development of junior medical staff.
- Be committed to working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and contributing positively to service development.
Desirable skills and experience include:
- Advanced laparoscopic surgical skills, including management of complex gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis.
- Obstetric ultrasound expertise, including a Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU) or willingness to undertake this training.
- Experience in the assessment and management of pelvic pain.
