Physiotherapist – Oncology/ Haematology

About the Role

We are looking for a compassionate and skilled Physiotherapist to join the Oncology & haematology Ward at Christchurch Hospital.

This service provides acute care for patients with a range of malignant and non‑malignant haematological conditions, solid tumour cancers, and those undergoing autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

This is a unique and deeply meaningful area of practice where physiotherapists play a vital role in managing fatigue, de-conditioning, respiratory complications, functional decline, and supporting mobilisation during complex treatment journeys.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide physiotherapy assessment and intervention for patients receiving cancer treatment or haematology care
  • Support patients undergoing stem cell transplantation, including managing prolonged admissions, infection‑related complications, and functional decline
  • Deliver mobility, strengthening, respiratory support, and fatigue management interventions
  • Educate patients and whānau on self‑management, exercise, and safety during treatment
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to optimise recovery, safety, and discharge planning
  • Contribute to service development, clinical quality initiatives, and oncology/haematology pathways
  • Supervise and mentor rotational physiotherapists and final year physiotherapy students
  • Participate in peer review and supervision structure

You will be required to contribute to the weekend and on-call rosters.

About the Team

This role is part of the Christchurch Hospital Physiotherapy team, with over 60 team members across a large range of specialities and more specifically sits within the medical specialties and neurosciences cluster, a team of approximately 20 physiotherapists. This supportive and patient centred care focused cluster strives to bring the best out of each other to deliver the best patient care.

About you

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate the following:

  • 3+ years’ clinical experience, including experience in oncology/haematology is an advantage
  • Acute hospital inpatient experience
  • New Zealand Registered physiotherapist with current APC
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in your role
