About the Role

  • Prevocational Medical Education Senior House Officer / Night Elective position, Christchurch Hospital, 6 month run, full time.
  • Work with a group of others also passionate about medical education and ensuring Waitaha Canterbury offers an exceptional education programme.
  • This SHO role will be suited to individuals seeking opportunities outside traditional career paths that can demonstrate interest and efforts extending beyond their current roles and who will bring new and diverse skills.

As a Prevocational Medical Education Senior House Officer, you will support the Medical Education and Training Unit (METU) to deliver a high quality, high value medical education, training, and pastoral care programme at Waitaha Canterbury.  You will work with METU and other Waitaha Canterbury colleagues to embed quality improvement, innovation, translational research, education, and leadership development. There will be the opportunity to identify a key project or quality improvement initiative in medical education and scope to tailor the role to suit individual interests and skills. You will also contribute to the night elective roster. This position is part of the night elective roster which covers 4 sets of 3 nights and 3 sets of 4 nights across a 3 month period.

About you

As a Prevocational Medical Education Senior House Officer, you will:

  • be PGY3 or above.
  • have a demonstrated interest in teaching, mentoring, and coaching other doctors.
  • have an ability and enthusiasm for leading transformation in medical education.
  • be able to create learner focused educational opportunities and support the development of others through mentoring, teaching, and training.
  • have an ability to produce and deliver high quality written and oral material for a range of audiences /stakeholder groups.
  • be able to develop evaluations/audit protocols and analyse, critically appraise, and interpret data and complex information.
  • Knowledge and commitment of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how the principles can be applied to health.
  • A willingness to grow and further develop an equity lens and skillset, both to assist Māori and minority groups. 
  • You must be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility by visiting the Council’s website at www.mcnz.org.nz

About the Team

The role will be based at Christchurch Hospital within the Medical Education and Training Unit (METU).

The METU team comprises the Director Medical Clinical Training, three Medical Education Officers, an Administrator, and 15 Prevocational Educational Supervisors.
