About the role

Based at Hillmorton Campus, Whāngai Aroha, an inpatient ward comprising of Perinatal Mental Health Service and Eating Disorders Services, provides care regionally for the South Island.

Perinatal Mental Health Service (5.2 beds) provides specialist treatment for women who present with complex moderate to severe maternal mental illness who require admission. This is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to work in a specialist inpatient setting to provide care, assessment and management of infants who are admitted with their mothers to promote infant health and development and ongoing attachment and bonding. 

The role involves hands-on infant care, emotional support and education for parents, supporting caregivers with parentcraft skills, and implementing feed/sleep routines where required. You will also be monitoring the physical health of infants, and liaising with external providers, house officer and paediatrician to ensure physical and emotional needs of the infant are being met. Nurturing the mother-infant relationship and promoting infant mental development through play and connection.

Supporting and educating other members of the team on infant cares and mother-infant relationships and providing feedback on the infant to the multi-disciplinary team is also an integral part of this role.

This Specialty Service offers a fulfilling and dynamic environment and opportunities to further your nursing career. Comprehensive treatment, multi-disciplinary functions across the inpatient and outpatient teams, and liaison with multiple agencies, are integral to service provision.

About You

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to bring your enthusiasm and motivation to work with us, in return we’ll provide you with a great opportunity to enhance your skills in a specialty area. 

Skills and Attributes 

  • Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a current APC
  • An interest and passion in infant health and development
  • Effective therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills to forge and foster meaningful relationships with parents, infants and whanau
  • Reliable, hardworking member of the nursing team with strong organisational skills
  • An ability to promote the health and wellbeing of babies, advocating for infant needs in MDT settings
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work within family’s routines and schedules
  • Adhere to guidelines of Cultural Safety and the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • A background in infant nursing and/or mental health nursing would be recommended.
