Registered Nurse – Chatham Islands

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for experienced Registered Nurses to join our team at the Chatham Islands Health Centre.

We have both casual and permanent opportunities available and are open to applications from Nursing staff who are interested in fixed-term placements/contracts from 6 weeks – 3 months to experience our unique working environment and see if it is the right fit for you.

Working within a small, close-knit clinical team, you will provide a broad range of nursing care to the local community and visitors to the Chatham Islands. This is a unique rural generalist role combining primary care nursing with acute assessment and response in a remote setting.

Our nursing team operates a roster of four Registered Nurses, providing a mix of primary care and on-call PRIME coverage for acute presentations. Patients may require ongoing care within the facility for periods ranging from 24 hours to three days, making strong clinical assessment, decision-making and rural generalist nursing skills essential.

You will work alongside other Registered Nurses and General Practitioners, with the opportunity to use and further develop a broad range of clinical skills.

In this role, you will:

• Provide primary care nursing within the Chatham Islands Health Centre
• Assess, triage and manage acute presentations, accidents and injuries
• Participate in the on-call roster and provide PRIME emergency response
• Provide ongoing nursing care for patients who may remain within the facility for up to three days
• Work collaboratively with Registered Nurses, General Practitioners and the wider clinical team
• Utilise Evolution as the Patient Management System (PMS)
• Undertake a broad range of rural nursing duties, including phlebotomy and x-ray services
• Adhere to the principles of cultural safety and Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Alongside our permanent opportunity, we are also interested in hearing from experienced internal Health New Zealand Registered Nurses who may be available for block placements of approximately six weeks to six months to support our Chatham Islands service.

About the Service

The Chatham Islands Health Centre provides healthcare to a small and remote island community, as well as visitors to the islands.

Working on the Chatham Islands offers a nursing experience unlike many others. You will become part of a close-knit team and community while practising across a broad clinical scope in a rural and remote environment.

The islands are renowned for their rugged natural environment, conservation areas and unique cultural and heritage landmarks, offering the opportunity to experience a distinctive part of Aotearoa New Zealand while making a meaningful contribution to the health of the local community.

About You

You will be an experienced Registered Nurse with strong rural generalist and primary care nursing skills who is confident working within a remote healthcare environment. You will bring sound clinical judgement, adaptability and the ability to assess and respond to acute presentations, while working both autonomously and collaboratively as part of a small clinical team.

You will also have:

• Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current APC
• Rural generalist and/or rural or remote primary healthcare experience
• Confidence to work autonomously while recognising when additional clinical support is required
• Ability to assess and respond appropriately to acute presentations
• Full New Zealand driver licence and confidence driving on rural and gravel roads
• Good IT skills, with experience using Evolution as a Patient Management System advantageous
• A willingness to learn and develop new clinical skills

Desirable experience or training in:

• PRIME
• Immunisation
• Mental health
• Sexual health

Training and support can also be provided to develop the core skills required for the role.
