Registered Nurse – Infection Management/OPAT Service

About the Role
The Infection Management Service | Te Whare Tukumate, based at Christchurch Hospital, provides specialist assessment, advice and management for people with a wide variety of infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.
Our multidisciplinary team includes medical and nursing specialists in infectious diseases and provides care to patients both within the hospital and across the wider community. Follow-up care may be provided in person, in Outpatients Department or through virtual clinics.
We have an opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our specialist team in a permanent 0.6FTE position. Working collaboratively with nursing, medical and wider multidisciplinary colleagues, you will support the assessment, coordination, and delivery of high-quality care for patients accessing the Infection Management Service.
In this role, you will:
- Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments and contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care plans to continue antibiotic treatment in the community, once discharged.
- Provide nursing care, education, and support to patients and their whānau
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate and coordinate patient ongoing care, and discharge planning
- Work with district Nursing Service in the community, including in other regions, e.g., West Coast and North Canterbury to set up OPAT services.
- Recognise changes in patients’ health status and respond or escalate appropriately
- Support patients to understand their treatment and maximise opportunities for independence and self-management
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure patient privacy and confidentiality
- Contribute to quality improvement, nursing education and the ongoing development of clinical practice within the service

You will be an effective communicator with strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You will bring sound nursing assessment and clinical decision-making skills, alongside a commitment to ongoing professional development.
Skills and Experience
- Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a current APC
- Infectious diseases experience highly advantageous
- Sound nursing assessment and clinical decision-making skills
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with patients, whānau and multidisciplinary colleagues
- Commitment to ongoing development of nursing knowledge and clinical skills
- Commitment to equitable health outcomes and culturally safe practice
