Registered Nurse | Medical Day Unit / Oncology Service, Ashburton Hospital
Make a meaningful difference in cancer care within your local community while contributing to the national Faster Cancer Treatment health target.
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse to join our Medical Day Unit / Oncology Service based at Ashburton Hospital.
This role delivers cancer therapy locally, enabling patients to receive high-quality treatment closer to home while supporting the organisation to achieve the Faster Cancer Treatment (FCT) health target. In addition to systemic anti-cancer therapies, the service also provides a range of other infusion treatments and day procedures, making this a varied and clinically rewarding position.
You will provide comprehensive nursing assessment, care planning, administration of systemic anti-cancer therapies and other infusions, patient education, and ongoing monitoring of patients throughout their treatment journey. Working within your scope of practice, you will practise both autonomously and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team across the Canterbury region.
This is an opportunity to apply and grow advanced nursing skills in a supportive, patient-centred environment where equity, safety, and quality are central to care delivery. You will contribute to timely access to treatment, continuous quality improvement initiatives, and the delivery of equitable health outcomes for our rural community.
About the Team / Service / Location
The Ashburton Medical Day Unit / Oncology Service provides outpatient cancer therapy, infusion treatments, day procedures, and supportive care to patients across Mid Canterbury. We work in close partnership with the wider Canterbury oncology network to ensure patients receive safe, coordinated, and timely care aligned with national standards and health targets.
Ashburton offers the best of both worlds – a strong sense of community with easy access to Christchurch and the outdoors of the Canterbury region.
About You
As a Registered Nurse in this service, you will:
- Be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate
- Have experience in oncology, chemotherapy administration, infusion therapy, or medical nursing (oncology experience preferred)
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake comprehensive assessments and deliver complex nursing care
- Show a commitment to achieving equitable health outcomes and applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice
- Be confident working both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Have excellent communication skills and a strong focus on patient education, safety, and quality care
