About the role
Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is the largest medical laboratory in the South Island, serving a population of around 600,000 locally and up to 1.2 million regionally. We also provide national and international testing services in selected specialties.
We’re seeking a Scientific Officer with proven experience in mass spectrometry, ideally with a background in biochemistry, toxicology, or analytical chemistry. This is a senior-level role suited to someone who can hit the ground running and contribute to high-impact projects across our specialist services.
Located opposite Hagley Park South, CHL offers a dynamic and collaborative environment with a diverse caseload and opportunities to lead innovation in laboratory science.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific and Technical Leadership
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot mass spectrometry platforms (e.g., LC-MS/MS, GC-MS).
- Design and validate analytical methods for clinical applications.
- Collaborate with the Section Head and Chemical Pathologists to develop and deliver strategic goals.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to training programmes.
Quality and Compliance
- Ensure all work aligns with ISO 15189 standards.
- Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate documentation and uphold data integrity.
Professional Development
- Stay current with developments in mass spectrometry and related fields.
- Engage in CPD and contribute to publications or funding proposals.
- Foster a culture of curiosity, learning, and scientific excellence.

- Support improved health outcomes for Māori through culturally responsive practice.
- Honour and respect tikanga and te ao Māori in your work.

About you
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- A PhD or Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in mass spectrometry and laboratory operations.
- Familiarity with quality systems and regulatory compliance.
- Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills.
- A collaborative mindset and commitment to equity and excellence.
- Registered with the Medical Sciences Council ideally as a Scientist (or if Technician you will need to work towards MLS qualification).
