Senior Cultural Quality Advisor

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Cultural Quality Advisor to join our Quality Team on Te Tai o Poutini.

This role is pivotal in improving the quality, safety, and overall experience of health and disability services received by Māori individuals and their whānau, in alignment with Whakamaua: Māori Health Action Plan – Priority Area 6.

You will lead the design and delivery of a cultural audit process using the new Ngā Paerewa Health and Disability Service Standards, and work in partnership with Māori and other communities to ensure that their voices, experiences and aspirations are reflected across all aspects of service design, delivery and governance.

About you

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Improve cultural quality and equity in health service delivery for Māori and whānau.
  • Design and implement a cultural audit process aligned with Ngā Paerewa.
  • Lead authentic co-design processes that capture community voices and produce data showing improved outcomes for all.
  • Embed consumer and whānau voice in all stages of service design, delivery, evaluation, and governance.
  • Create safe feedback channels where whānau feel confident to share their lived experiences, guided by the principles of whanaungatanga, aroha, and manaakitanga.
  • Conduct needs analyses (stocktakes) against the Audit Framework, identifying areas for ongoing improvement.
  • Develop mana-enhancing processes where whānau voice is valued and heard by clinicians.
  • Provide leadership that upholds the values of mana tangata, mana motuhake, and tino rangatiratanga.
  • Ensure a clear complaints pathway is embedded within the quality service, with transparent reporting and feedback loops to the Quality Team and Consumer Advisory Board.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven ability to apply Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice.
  • Deep cultural understanding and commitment to improving outcomes for Māori and other priority populations.
  • Strong understanding of inequities in health outcomes and how to address them through quality improvement.
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with iwi, hapū, whānau, and Māori providers.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Courage, integrity, and resilience to lead complex mahi that challenges the status quo.
  • A genuine commitment to equity, inclusion, and mana-enhancing engagement.
