About the role

Te Whare Hohou Roko (TWHR) is a medium secure 9 bed Forensic inpatient unit based on the Hillmorton Hospital campus and is part of the Specialist Mental Health Services within Health New Zealand, Waitaha. TWHR provides multi-disciplinary team assessment and treatment for people whose mental illness has resulted in acts of violence or who are assessed with complex needs and known high risks. TWHR offers a range of individual and group therapeutic activities to support a person’s individual treatment plan via a case management model of care. The social work role provides a systemic and family focused lens to support multi-disciplinary team assessment and treatment. They are a key component in the patient’s recovery pathway. 

Permanent, part time 0.8FTE position. The 32 hours can be worked across Monday to Friday or 4 days per week. 

About You

In this role, you will be:

• Involved in MDT assessments, treatment planning, reviews and discharge planning.
• Able to sustain professional boundaries and attend supervision to maintain empathetic care.
• Safeguarding patient rights, through holding a broad knowledge of legislation
• Develop a good working knowledge of community and internal support services and government agencies that best meet patient and family/whanau needs.
• Developing a good understanding of the interface between Specialist Mental Health Services and other government agencies like, Department of Corrections and Ministry of Health.

Skills and experience

• The ability to apply a social work perspective (frameworks, practice models) to understand a person’s needs.
• An understanding of Te Tiriti and knowledge of kaupapa Maori practice models
• The ability to develop effective therapeutic relationships.
• The ability to work collaboratively with the person, their family/whanau and the clinical team.
• The ability to prioritise and plan your workload-based on the service needs.
• The ability to advocate for the person and challenge discriminatory attitudes
• Resilience in working with a robust/challenging patient group
