About the Role

The Speech Language Therapy role is embedded in the interdisciplinary team but benefits from having close professional support from colleagues across Burwood Hospital and other community teams. Our Speech Language Therapists provide skilled assessment, management and rehabilitation of a broad range of swallowing and communication disorders. There is also involvement in the Videofluoroscopy service. 

The role includes the assessment and management of a broad range of communication and swallowing difficulties within the adult rehabilitation wards.  Depending on the right applicant, this could be focused in certain wards such as Older Persons Mental Health, or stroke rehabilitation, or it could cover general Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation wards. 

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive assessments, evaluations and treatments in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice for Speech Language Therapy
  • Educating and providing resources to patients and their families/whānau, your clinical team and colleagues in the interdisciplinary team
  • Ensuring appropriate documentation and patient records are updated and maintained
  • Contributing to quality service provision within the allocated wards and the wider Burwood site, as well as the Speech Language Therapy service across Canterbury.

About You

We are seeking experienced Speech Language Therapists who have excellent interpersonal skills, confident with videofluoroscopy and a team player attitude to join our team. The successful applicant/s will also demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to complete thorough assessments and be able to flexibly integrate interventions using problem solving, robust communication whilst being led by your client’s goals
  • Ability to use objective assessment tools particularly Videofluoroscopy
  • Ability to work within interdisciplinary teams 
  • Experience in working with patients with significant comorbidities is advantageous
  • Established student supervision skills would be required to provide clinical education placements for BSLPs and MSLPs
  • Experience in using dysphagia rehabilitation techniques such as BISSKiT and EMST is desirable
  • Exposure dealing with complex videofluoroscopies, any tracheostomy competency or FEES experience is advantageous
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Registered with NZSTA and a current Annual Practicing certificate is essential
