Speech Language Therapist


  • Fixed term full time position for a junior SLT, 1.0FTE through to March 2027
  • Based at Burwood Hospital
  • Hours of work are Monday - Friday between 0730/0800 - 1600/1630

About the Role

The Speech Language Therapy role is embedded in the interdisciplinary team but benefits from having close professional support from colleagues across Burwood Hospital and other community teams. Our Speech Language Therapists provide skilled assessment, management and rehabilitation of a broad range of swallowing and communication disorders. There is also involvement in the Videofluoroscopy service. 

The role includes the assessment and management of a broad range of communication and swallowing difficulties within the adult rehabilitation wards.  This particular role will be primarily based in the stroke rehabilitation team supported by senior clinicians, although you may be required to work in other parts of the hospital occasionally.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive assessments, evaluations and treatments in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice for Speech Language Therapy
  • Educating and providing resources to patients and their families/whānau, your clinical team and colleagues in the interdisciplinary team
  • Ensuring appropriate documentation and patient records are updated and maintained
  • Contributing to quality service provision within the allocated wards and the wider Burwood site, as well as the Speech Language Therapy service across Canterbury
  • Using tools such as Videofluoroscopy, BISSKiT and EMST within rehabilitation sessions where appropriate
  • Working in an interdisciplinary team for stroke rehabilitation supported by senior clinicians. This includes shared clinical goal setting and review, joint sessions and running therapeutic groups on the stroke rehabilitation ward with colleagues

About You

We are seeking a junior Speech Language Therapist to join our team, you will be within your first 2 years of practice and will be supported through your NZSTA new graduate framework.  The successful applicant/s will also demonstrate the following:

  • A strong commitment to the provision of patient-centred quality care
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as a supportive and reliable team member to ensure the best health outcomes for people and their whānau
  • Self-awareness with strong reflective abilities and able to identify areas for growth and development
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills, along with flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to meet changes in clinical demands
  • Registered with NZSTA and a current Annual Practicing certificate is essential
