Why is this a great role

• This is a relatively new role for the South Island Eating Disorders (SIEDS) which is aimed to improve the experience for young tangata whai ora (up to the age of 25 years) and their families and whanau on their treatment journey through our service.
• The role will act as a bridge between clinicians and tangata whaiora to improve communication and clinical outcomes. Pathways to care and access to care for tangata whai ora  will improve, and this will have a beneficial effect on their experience while they are in the service.
• The lived experience voice and perspective have an important role to play in the treatment and recovery for people who have an eating disorder. This role is relatively new to our service which specialises in the treatment of eating disorders and is an exciting opportunity to explore and continue to develop ways to enhance the relationships between young tangata whaiora and the treating team, with a view to improving and maximising treatment outcomes.
• You will also work with families and whanau. Given the important role they play in supporting their family member and their direct involvement in treatment we anticipate they will feel supported while they walk alongside their family whanau member.

We are a specialist team treating people who have a range of eating disorders. You will be based at Hillmorton Hospital and will work across our community and inpatient teams from where we provide direct clinical care to young tangata whai ora in the Waitaha Canterbury area and liaison, supervision and support to specialist mental health clinicians throughout the South Island.

You will develop peer relationships with young people up to the age of 25 who are being treated by SIEDS. Your lived experience will inspire hope and offer encouragement in their journey through the service.

You will be a member of the multi-disciplinary team, contributing to the team culture and developing relationships with your  SIEDS colleagues.

Using clear communication and being able to articulate peer support principles, values and tasks.  Including contributing to written documentation and quality initiatives.

About the Role

You will be working with young tangata whai ora, developing peer relationships with them which are based on mutuality and authenticity.

You will use your lived experience to inspire hope and offer encouragement in their journey through the service.

At times peer support maybe provided in a group setting –Training to be provided if and when group facilitation skills are needed.

You will challenge stigma and discrimination and proactively promote inclusion and diversity.

About you

• As a youth peer support worker, you must have your own lived experience as a young person of having had an eating disorder which required you to access treatment.

• It is desirable to have a sound knowledge of the community and NGO mental health sector, particularly peer support community providers so that practical information and connections can be made with the people you are working with.
