Clinical Nurse Specialist – Sexual Health

About the Service

The Christchurch Hospital Sexual Health Centre (SHC) is a specialist hospital outpatient clinic that provides confidential and specialised management of sexually transmitted infections, HIV and sexual health related concerns. We are a community service for people over the age of 14 years, needing tests, treatments and follow-up for sexually transmitted infections and associated genital problems. 

About the Role

Supporting the current ACNM, CNS, registered nurse, and nurse aide team to provide:

  • Advice and direction to facilitate self-collected testing to screen for sexually transmitted infections both onsite at our Upper Riccarton clinic and at community-based outreach clinics.
  • Treatment for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, and herpes as per the New Zealand Sexual Health guidelines and the CSHS Medication Standing Orders.
  • Emergency contraception as per the guidelines.
  • Surveillance and management of laboratory test results, patient notification of positive results, and booking of appropriate appointments to access required treatment.
  • Phlebotomy as per Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora protocols.
  • Triaging of requests for care via phone call.

The CSHS nurses are experienced and supportive, and are excited to welcome a new addition, with an appreciation of the skills and perspectives that you would bring to this collaborative nursing team.

About You

We are seeking an experienced RN or CNS that is recognised as an expert within Sexual Health or a similar area of expertise. Is able to demonstrate a commitment to education, quality improvement and collaborative care.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Expert clinical assessment skills and proven experience in the specialty area.
  • Postgraduate qualification in nursing (e.g., PG Diploma) or working towards one.
  • Proven ability to lead quality initiatives, develop nursing standards, and contribute to professional growth.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team, demonstrating innovation and proactive problem-solving.
  • Registered with the Nursing Council of NZ with a current APC. 
  • Certification in prescribing emergency contraception, independent vaccination, or as a registered smear taker is advantageous.
  • Qualification as a Nurse prescriber is highly advantageous.
  • Experience engaging with Māori and Pacific communities, and the ability to build trusting, culturally responsive relationships, will be considered a significant advantage.
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
  • Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
