Patient Safety Officer - Quality and Patient Safety Team, Mental Health

About the Role
Here at the Specialist Mental Health Services, we believe that by practicing the principles of quality improvement and patient safety, we enhance the health care services we deliver, increase job satisfaction of our staff and overall improve organisational effectiveness. We are passionate about continuous improvement and learning from serious adverse events in order to improve care delivery. Based at Hillmorton Hospital, you will be an integral member of the Quality and Patient Safety team, working with quality coordinators, clinical teams and senior leaders to lead serious adverse event investigations and improve consumer outcomes.
About You
You will be a member of our Serious Adverse Event Team and required to lead and/or support serious event reviews. You'll have a proven ability to communicate calmly and effectively with tāngata whaiora (consumers), their whānau (family), and clinicians affected by serious adverse events. With initial mentoring and support, you will be required to integrate and analyse information from families, staff, clinical records and guiding documents, facilitate a review panel for the incident and write a robust report which will be disseminated to tāngata whaiora and/or whānau, staff and external agencies.
Your ability to build and maintain professional working relationships will be essential as you work with other members of the Serious Adverse Event Team, Lived Experience Advisory Team, Service leadership, Quality and Patient Safety Team, Legal Services and lead a review panel of clinicians from multiple disciplines.
Skills and Experience:
You will be a Senior Registered Nurse, or Allied Health professional with a current APC and scope to practice in Mental Health with a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience.
Essential:
- Significant experience in Mental Health
- Knowledge of and a commitment to Te Tiriti O Waitangi
- Demonstrate effective communication and engagement with tāngata whaiora (consumers) and their whanau (family)
- High standard of written communication, report writing and analytical skills
- Ability to lead and coordinate a team of health professionals through a review process.
- Demonstrate effective engagement and communication with senior leaders and clinicians.
Desirable:
- A broad understanding of Mental Health systems and clinical practice in New Zealand
- An understanding of Quality and Patient Safety systems and standards
- Experiencing in advance technical or report writing
- Post graduate Qualification
- Understanding of incident investigations
