Registered Nurse – Haematology with a Māori focus


  • 0.6FTE (24 hours per week) Permanent position
  • Works in both inpatient & outpatient settings
  • 8 hour Shifts between Monday - Friday

About the Role

The Māori Haematology Registered Nurse provides specialist nursing care and cultural advocacy for Māori patients and whānau receiving haematology services. The role focuses on improving health equity, access, engagement, and outcomes for Māori, while delivering high quality, evidence-based haematology nursing care.

The nurse works in partnership with patients, whānau, the multidisciplinary team, Māori Health Services, and community providers, upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles of Partnership, Participation, and Protection.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a cultural safety champion within the haematology service.
  • Support Māori patients and whānau to navigate the health system, reducing barriers to care.
  • Facilitate whānau involvement in care planning and decision making.
  • Collaborate closely with Māori Health Services, Kaitakawaenga, and community providers.
  • Contribute to service initiatives aimed at reducing inequities in haematology outcomes for Māori.

About the Service

The Haematology service manages patients locally and from throughout the South Island, B6 is the inpatient ward, there is a Day Stay Unit and Outpatient area too.

About You

Essential:

  • Registered Nurse with current NZ Nursing Council APC
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving Māori health outcomes
  • Sound understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in healthcare
  • Experience in  oncology, or haematology nursing
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Identifies as Māori and/or significant experience working with Māori communities
  • Postgraduate study or working towards postgraduate qualification (cancer, haematology, medical nursing)
  • Experience in patient navigation or equity-focused roles
  • Knowledge of Māori health models and kaupapa Māori approaches
